KEJ was born in 1997 at the annual Festival de Cornouailles, Quimper, Brittany. Its theme-instrument that year was the flute, organised by the incomparable Breton flutist Jean-Michel VEILLON. He invited Jean-Luc THOMAS and Pierrick TARDIVEL, then a duo. They received an overwhelming ovation for their work and success was immediate.
KEJ shortly afterwards became a trio with the arrival of guitarist Philippe GLOAGUEN.

Their music goes straight to the soul. It is an atmospheric blend of traditional Breton, jazz and highly-contemporary music, emerging and reemerging like floating clouds in a wide, blue sky.
They create a poetic balance between melody and atmosphere, in which sounds and silences, like those of the sea, are inseparably connected, but alive in themselves. Improvisation plays an essential part.
The result is rich yet restrained, avant-garde yet traditional. Their desire to "sculpt the music" to enhance the sense of hearing is always there.

Encounters
The three musicians of KEJ forever seek new encounters leading to cosmopolitan musical creations.
The latest musical exchange with Brazilian musicians developed from KEJ's visit to Sao Paulo, Brazil in 2001 at the initiative of Breton guitarist Roger EON.
In return, the Brazilians joined KEJ in Brittany, in January 2002, seven in residence together to create a Breton-Brazilian musical repertoire. After 10 days, this was duly performed in concert at the Carré Magique theatre, Lannion, Brittany, before an audience of 600, and in concerts elsewhere in Brittany.

KEJ also went to Mali, Africa, in December 2000, and "Namou" was born, grouping the trio with Malian and Breton musicians such as Mamadou KANTE, Annie EBREL, and others.

Kej « encounter » : Three letters, three so different sounds that mingle so easily. Three letters, one syllabe. Three musicians, each of us roaming our own musical landscape, meeting in the heart of Breton Music. We wanted this encounter to be spontaneous, like an unbridled conversation in front of a microphone. Each of us talking freely, unvreservedly, just being ourselves.

Nouveau !
